Diet drinks
I hear people say they cut "sodas" out and loose weight. How can cutting Diet drinks (Diet coke and Diet Dr Pr) help when there are no calories and no carbs? A soda at lunch is my caffine boost and sweet fix.

Artificial Sweeteners...
The artificial sweeteners in diet sodas (aspartame, sucralose) actually cause a neurological response that triggers appetite.

"A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain."

Alternatives?
I know I always had the same problem. "What harm can a diet soda do?". Well I switched from a soda at lunch to a small iced coffee. I get my caffeine, and since it is natural sugar that I use I don't have all the side effects of the artificial stuff. And if you find it hard to do at work, or you just don't like their coffee. Experiment with the instant packages of single serve coffee. I like the taster's choice house blend. Good luck!

Other 0 Calorie Sugar Substitutes?
Are there any safe sugar substitutes? Stevia, Splenda, etc? Or are they all really the same thing with different names?

Everyone should avoid artificial sweeteners
It amazing how quickly you can get used to cutting out the sugar in drinks if you just give it a chance. It took some getting used to, but now I love unsweetened ice tea and when I taste sweetened tea by mistake the sugar almost makes me gag ;)

Stevia
Stevia is extracted from a leaf so it is a natural herb. It has been available in Japan and South America for decades with no adverse health effects. Aspartame (NutraSweet), Sucralose (Splenda) and Saccharine are manufactured chemicals that have all shown to have some health side effects.

With stevia you just have to watch each brand to see what other ingredients they may be combining with it.

Same issue
My doctor told me to cut out all sodas back in August of this year. My blood sugar was running rampant and my ankles, calves, and hands were swelling every day. I did cut back to no more than 12 oz a day. My blood sugar dropped instantly and the swelling went away. I thought that maybe it was just because the doctor put me on insulin shots. But when my mother became ill and I was sitting with her 18 to 20 hours a day, I went back to my old soda habits, drinking 48 oz or more a day (diet soda). My blood sugar started going through the roof and the swelling came back. I noted my eating. I wasn't cheating bad enough to raise my blood sugar over 400. So, while I don't know if the diet sodas were THE trigger, I do believe that they were a PART of it.

diet soda
Everyone is different. i drink diet soda everyday, and am not overweight. Some people react to things differently. Diet soda can make people feel bloated, but dont let anyone tell you to have regular soda over diet soda, that's crazy. There arent many diets out there that are one size fits all, everyones bodies react to things differently. If you are struggling with your weight it probably has more to do with the foods you are eating vs. the diet soda you're drinking.
