The simple answer is...yes
Yes, it does matter when you eat. If you are eating most of your calories at night, your body is likely not getting enough food during the day. This causes your body to begin to try to store up what food it does get as fat during the day because it is not sure when it will get more. The ideal situation is to eat 5-6 small meals evenly spaced throughout the day. This keeps your metabolic processes steady throughout the day rather than cycling, like it is probably doing now. If you are going to eat a snack before bed, something higher in protein and low in fat and carbs is probably going to be best. Your body is in a catabolic (muscle burning) state while you sleep, so providing a little extra protein during that time is a good idea, especially if building muscle is a goal.
So, evenly spaced small meals, the total of which does not go over your daily caloric needs is the best plan.

Costco article on grazing
Jeanpark:
I recently read an article on grazing on the Costco connection mag. and it explains the benefits of eating throughout the day in smaller amounts. It makes sense to eat the daily intake throughout the day as Josh says.
