How much protein after a workout?
I'm currently working out to stay fit and to help with my recovery from a shoulder problem. So, I'm not looking to loose any weight...actually I could stand to gain a few pounds. The workout tracker tells me how many calories I've burned, but how do I know how much extra protien I need to help build muscle. Based on my weight, I need about 50 gms a day as a baseline, but how much extra do I need?

Also, what post-workout snacks do you enjoy. I personally find that the protein bars taste gritty. Sometimes I'll just roll up some slice turkey breast and eat that. Looking for some variety though.

The body-building sites I read suggest at least .8 grams of protein for every pound of body weight.

The protein bars I use are ThinkThin (20 grams of protein and no added sugar!) I don't think they taste gritty :)

Way to figure Protein needs.
Divide your weight in half, so if you weigh 200 you need about 100-120 grams of protein a day. Even inactive people NEED to have this amount. So I try to have about 33 grams at each meal, or so...some days I do fall short.

Be careful of processed turkey/ham/coldcuts...they are mostly "excruded" (parts of the animal that are inedible all condensed down to form the meat-then sliced) it is FULL of preservatives and SALT!!!!

Good luck!!

A good protein shake that's low in sugar, I add banana and peanut butter, works for me.

I just posted a new thread regarding protein on diet/nutrition.
I have fallen short three days in a row.

I may need to start drinking more milk/smoothies...but my blender sucks.

Thanks for all the responses! I read somewhere you need 1g for every kg you weigh. Amazing how many different calculations there are. I haven't tried very many smoothies..maybe that's the way to go :)
