I need to eat less meat!
But I don't want to cut it out entirely :x

Any suggestions for good sources of protein?

I've already got boneless skinless chicken breasts, ground turkey, lowfat/fat free dairy products, eggs, and soy milk. I love lentils and other beans, but so many beans are kind of bland unless you make them in some sort of sauce that is the opposite of diet!

I eat fishes still too. I just need more alternate sources that are lowfat/fat free to make sure I'm fulfilling my necessary daily intake. Any suggestions? Whether you are suggesting just something simple like lentils or a recipe that is inexpensive and quick, I appreciate any advice :) I'm looking to lose weight, not bulk up, but I know that I need to have enough protein to make my exercise count!

Thanks in advance!

ideas
Hi Kristique -
I am a vegetarian and my protein sources include several of the things you mentioned plus a few others:
- milk
- string cheese (this is my most frequent cheese b/c it's lower in fat and doesn't have to be refrigerated all day so I can throw it in my purse for a snack)
- fresh mozzarella cheese (reduced fat is best but it's hard to find where I shop so I usually have full fat and just eat it occaisionally
- ricotta cheese - reduced fat is best and easy to find
- cottage cheese - low or non-fat
- non-fat plain Greek yogurt (expensive but 23g protein per cup!)
- eggs
- brown rice
- quinoa
- SunWarrior organic protein powder (from brown rice)
- tofu (I put silken tofu in smoothies nearly every day, you can't taste it, also cook firm tofu occaisionally - great in stirfry)
- tempah (a soybean product)
- black beans, red kidney beans, pinto beans, refried beans (I get organic ones so it's just cooked, blended pinto beans with a little salt), black eyed peas, garbanzo beans

Two of my fav very quick very healthy ways to eat beans: refried beans heated w/ a dash of cholula hot sauce (i'll eat about 1/2 - which is about 1/3 of a can); and cooked black eyed peas (from dry beans, no salt added, just the beans and water) that have been rinsed and cooled mixed with a chopped up roma tomato and some fresh cilantro and a dash of sea salt - usually do a cup of the black eyed peas.

I have been posting everything I eat in Fitclick lately - if you'd like to add me and check out my meals for some new ideas you're welcome to do so.

Note - check the labels on dairy products - low or non-fat dairy is better for you b/c lower cholesterol and lower saturated fat ( good to limit animal-based saturated fats), but it's not worth it if there are added sugars (including high fructose corn syrup), chemicals or extra preservatives - I buy regular half/half cream for my coffee b/c the low fat and non-fat versions have added crap but usually I can find milk and cheese-type products that are low/non-fat w/o the extra stuff. I'd personally rather have the fat and cholesterol than added sugar or preservatives.

Ou!
You're so thorough! Thank you very much :D I'm planning on going shopping this weekend, so I will try to get a few of the items you listed so I can start fitting them into my meal plans.

The black eyed peas with roma tomatoes sounds delicious and I KNOW we have a bag of them in the cupboard. I will also make sure to check out your meals on your profile to get further inspiration if needed.

Thank you once more for your helpful reply! ^-^!

Soy Protein "Meats"
I don't know how you feel about the "fake meat" products that are out there but if you are interested in trying them there are a few that are really good! I'm not a vegetarian, I eat meat but I try to get my protein from other sources as well. Lightlife brand makes some really tasty soy protein products, you should try their Smart Tenders Savory Chick'n flavor. Morningstar Farms is also really good for this too. Their Garden Veggie patties are my favorite.

Protein
Almonds are a great source of protein and a wonderful snack to help curb appetite. Also protein shakes, I get the vanilla whey protein from wal-mart and blend one scoop of that with strawberries, blueberries, a banana skim milk and ice.
