L-Glutamine as an appetite suppressant
I have increased my daily L-glutamine intake from 1 gram to 2.5 grams a few weeks ago. I have researched and taking 5g or more grams a day does not have any adverse effects. I have not had any so far. I take .5g before and after aerobic exercise in the morning, .5g during the day, and .5g before and after lifting in the evening. I know all the great benefits of L-glutamine. I also read that it works as an appetite suppressant for some. I have noticed that I am eating less and forcing myself to eat to keep up my daily nutrition intakes. My daily calorie intake was on average 3500 cal a day and now I am down to 2400 calories on a good day. Anyone else experience this with L-glutamine?

Sounds Interesting
Are there any downsides, like side effects or health risks?

Benefits and side effects
Side effects:
According to WebMD: Glutamine is POSSIBLY SAFE for most adults and children when taken by mouth, but the potential side effects of glutamine are not known.

They do state that that if you have severe liver disease, monosodium glutamate sensitivity, mania, or breast feeding you should avoid it.

Benefits:
According to Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Consumer Version
- Serves as a source of fuel for cells lining the intestines
- It's involved in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid.
- Some experts point out that glutamine can pass through the protective blood-brain barrier and, because of this, it is known as brain fuel.
- Aids in protecting the body from ammonia toxicity.
- Appears to be necessary for normal brain function.
- Essential for maintaining amino acid balance in the body during times of severe stress.
- It's used by white blood cells and contributes to normal immune-system function.
- Promotes the maintenance of a healthy digestive tract.
- May promote mental alertness and improve mood and memory.
- May boost immune function and fight infection.
- May decrease sugar cravings and the desire for alcohol.
- Helps to prevent muscle loss and muscle wasting rebuilding muscles and repairing muscles after injuries and tough workouts.
- Athletes (may help protect the immune system from overtraining stress)

Our bodies produce L-glutamine, however, as fast as it is produced it is used. The body typically needs more glutamine when going through stressful experiences such as trauma, cancer, burns, and sepsis. Of course athletes, especially weight lifters swear by it.

According to Livestong.com
- It does not increase protein sysnthesis
- It does not improve strength
- It does not improve glycogen replenishment

For me it has lowered my appetite. I am eating less and still gaining muscle weight. I am sure it is not the same for everyone.
