Peter J. Burns III Readies New Phase of Cannabis Church Expansion
Serial entrepreneur Peter J. Burns III says he’s ready to restart his nonprofit Cannabis Church proprietorship after learning valuable lessons and gaining insight into managing this type of venture.

In California, and states all over the country, Cannabis Churches are becoming part of the landscape. At these churches, people don’t technically pay for marijuana at religious services. Instead, they tithe (donate money) to the church in exchange for cannabis.

“I learned important lessons in working on one of these in Los Angeles,” says Peter J. Burns III, who has spent the past 40-plus years creating, buying and expanding more than 150 businesses. “I paid my tuition, if you will, on how to run these and now we’re going at it in another soon-to-be-disclosed location.”

Cannabis by the Numbers

The cannabis industry is growing at an amazing pace. In 2016, sales were $6.7 billion. That number is predicted to jump to $20.2 billion in 2021.

As of 2020, the medical use of cannabis is legal in 33 states in America. The recreational use of cannabis has been legalized in 11 states—Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

At the federal level, however, use and possession of cannabis is illegal. As more and more states approve legal use on a recreational level, it’s highly likely the federal government will face great pressure to reconsider its stance.

There are legal issues. But proponents argue that many people truly believe that cannabis has a history and a proper place in being delivered as sacrament. Members of cannabis churches believe they are involved in religious efforts that help them connect to a higher power.

The Benefits of Cannabis Churches

Cannabis has been around for thousands of years. Its ingredients have the ability to expand consciousness and enhance creativity. Not surprisingly, the plant’s connection with religion and spirituality go way back. Cannabis has been, and continues to be, viewed as a sacrament (the same way wine is a sacrament in the Catholic Church).

Recognizing this, Peter J. Burns III has embarked on a crusade to reduce pain and suffering in the United States by making cannabis available as a sacrament.

This movement is not new. In California, there are dozens of independently owned cannabis churches. Peter J. Burns III’s goal is to create hundreds of these places of worship and reflection, in California and nationwide.

“This fits into my philosophy as an entrepreneur of doing well by doing good,” Burns says. “We are spreading peace, love, and a sense of togetherness by promoting the spiritual use of cannabis as sacrament.”

Peter J. Burns III has harnessed the legal, compliance and operational brain power for this movement.

“We have the model perfected,” Peter J. Burns III says. “It’s an open-faith temple that facilitates self-realization through fellowship, shared experience and sacramental activity during its services.”

The beauty of these services is that topics anyone can relate to are explored, including love, self-awareness and empathy. Everyone’s opinion and perspectives are respected, and no one is told what to believe. The idea is that everyone participating is given the opportunity to learn more about themselves by learning more about the experiences of others.
