Shoes
Don't buy shoes that are not designed for running, and don't use your running shoes for other sports. Do not wash your shoes in the washing machine or allow them to become excessively worn.
Most running shoes have an average life expectancy of about 300-600 miles. Very heavy or uneven runners might wear out part of the outer sole before the mid-sole is too compressed, but this is unlikely.
You should not put your running shoes in the washing machine, nor use very hot water to clean them. The hot water damages the shoe, especially the midsole, and leads to distortion in the shape of the shoe.

Agreed!!
I agree with Matt! One slight difference that I was told when I was at the specialty running store (Fleet Feet) to buy my running shoes was that I should replace them after 500-800 miles. I got high-end Asic Gels.

Running shoes
I was told the same thing. Only use them for running. Don't wash them. If they get wet don't dry them in a clothes dryer or over a vent. Put dry towels inside them. I have 3 pairs of Asics. My oldest pair is now converted to a street shoe. The others are strictly for running. I was told 800 km. that's about 500 miles. Have fun!
