Just walk
Just walk. It is cheap, you think while you walk; great ideas come too your mind. A few curls at home. That would be it for the moment just to get the momentum. Vitamin D also to keep to mind motivated... if you live in the North like I do in Ottawa (Canada). Days are getting longer.

Both
I'm thinking the gym then at home maybe. This is the time of the year when the enrollment fee is 0. Cancel your membership BEFORE you know you want to quit. (They take an extra month). You would be motivated for say a month or so, then start something at home, like a video tape of some exercising or even stepping. Be consistant, pick a time to do it without fail, 20 minutes a shot. By then you should see some kind of weight loss to make you stick with it a bit longer. Myself, I hate walking, nothing is more boring to me then that, (sold my treadmill) - but of course that would be a great thing too, purchase a good treadmill. Just some ideas. Try to change it some what so you dont get bored.

Depends
It really depends on what motivates you and what demotivates you. My husband is demotivated at the thought of spending time with other people so a gym membership (with all the people around) makes him less likely to exercise.

My mother gets depressed if she spends so much as a minute alone. So a gym membership (with all the people around) makes her more likely to exercise. She gets to make new friends and see all her old ones.

I'm in between. I'm more of a loner than my mother, but I find that leaving the house before my mind is awake enough to formulate excuses is the secret to exercise for me. For a long time a gym membership gave me a place to go in the morning. These days I wake up and run with my husband in the park. Either way, I get out of the house before my brain wakes up and manufactures reasons why I shouldn't exercise.

My guess is that spending the money will probably not motivate you to exercise more. It doesn't seem to work that way. Think about what you enjoy and the types of environments you enjoy being in (indoors or outdoors; with people or alone; etc) and then choose on that basis.

motivation
I agree with Carolyn. It's all about personal motivation. For me it seemed to be about whether I was truely serious about finally doing it. I made several attempts over the years to work out. Sometimes it was at the gym, sometimes it was at home. Each time I began with a gung-ho attitude and then quickly fizzed out. I just wasn't ready to committ. So I say, it doesn't matter where you work out, you have to be ready to make the committment.
I don't recomment spending money on the gym to motivate yourself. If it doesn't work you could be left feeling worse for having wasted the money. If you could find a gym with a pay as you go program or the local rec center, you might find that if it doesn't work out you have only spent a few dollars or that you love it and it's well worth shelling out a monthy membership.
Just try different things and see what makes you feel best. Either way, working out at home alone is usually not the way to start. It's really hard to stay motivated; for me anyway.

or...
There are activities that make working out easy. Find something that you love to do and use your money instead to become a regular member of that interest. Swimming, horse back riding, tennis, dancing is a good one, volleyball, softball...anything. Many recreational centers have indoor pools which is an excellent workout and you don't have to do anything except have fun in the water.

alternatives
if you have trouble finding motivation going to the gym, then it's possible that the gym simply isn't for you. maybe you can try some alternatives to typical cardio and weight training such as yoga, pilates, hiking, indoor or outdoor rock climbing. whenever i feel like the monotony of going to the gym is holding me down, i head over to my local indoor rock climbing facility. find out what you like and it'll give you the proper motivation.

I wouldn't
I joned a gym and I only use very little of the equipment, so I feel I am over paying just to using a portion. I would buy the equipment you will use.
Hope this helps.

It's a way of thinking
I joined a gym. I have a long way to go with my weight loss. I figure that I will loose 80 lbs and be approx. a size 8, which is my goal. I have already noticed success with a 10lb weight loss and better energy and outlook.

Here is what works for me: I force myself to go the first week. At this time I generally feel tired and sore. But after the first week I am starting to feel more energy, and am liking that. I spend some time thinking about my goals, how I am going to look after I reach those goals, and I tell myself, "My workouts will produce that for me." Basically I spend a lot of time connecting the gym with my goals in my mind. I then spend time thinking, "How badly do I want to be a size 8?" I then answer, "Pretty damn bad!" lol. This is a daily mantra.

Be careful that you do not think negatively. Only think about what you want to be, what is waiting for you. "If I go and do the work, this reward is waiting for me!" It is a positive way to think. Sometimes I think, "There is a slim, fit and pretty self under all this extra weight. I really want to find her." And then I go to the gym looking for her. lol
