yoyo dieting and weight loss?
I notice many of the posts say-here I go again. Well, that is exactly what I said when I joined here yesterday. My problem is feeling somewhat self-defeated at the outset. I know myself. I start out with a lot of will power and make good progress, only to then- about three months in- (after about 20lbs gone) ,start that stagnant platea phase. I am a bit more determined now because its now about my being prediabetic. I have a four year old that I need to be here for. She inspires me, plus, I want to set a good example for her. Any advice on how to take it all in stride and not worry about the past failures with maintaining a loss? Also, I am not used to cutting carbs, just calories, so I am really stumped on what is a good go to food, that can be low carb but satisfying. Thanks.

tips
So glad you are here! I have lived the journey and know the pitfalls and frustrations but also the thrill of seeing results over time and reaching goals. When you hit the plateaus during your journey there are ways to defeat them!! Many of us here have done it and we can give you advice and encouragement along the way.

On the carb topic, I hope someone can chime in here from the diabetic perspective. Personally, I have eliminated most of the starchy carbs from my life and increased my protein and fibrous fruits and veggies. My favorite snacks/meals almost always include some good protein source. My favorite lately has been Greek yogurt.

Good advice
Great advice. I will help you to mix carbs in your diet.
How to Mix Carbs, Fats, Proteins In Your Diet Protein.
Protein helps make up bone, muscle, skin, hair and other parts of the body. The body makes protein from amino acids in protein-rich foods, but it can't store amino acids -- so you have to eat protein every day.

Some protein sources, such as fatty meats and whole-milk dairy products, are high in saturated fat and cholesterol, which can lead to obesity and heart disease. Other sources of protein include fish, nuts, dried beans and soy foods. Foods from animals, such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy products, contain all the amino acids you need to make protein. Except for soy, vegetable proteins (from vegetables, beans, fruits, grains and nuts) lack one or more amino acids.

Eat a variety of proteins from different food groups. A healthy amount in one day is equivalent to a bowl of cereal with milk, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a piece of fish with a side of beans.

Carbohydrates include sugars, fibers and starches. They're important to a balanced diet because they give the body energy and help organs function. During digestion, carbohydrates break down into glucose (sugar) and enter the bloodstream.
Sources
Fruits or milk yield "simple carbohydrates" -- sugars like glucose and lactose. Grains, beans, potatoes and some other vegetables offer "complex carbohydrates," which consist mainly of starches and fiber. Some complex carbohydrates that are low in fiber - such as refined grains, pasta and white rice - raise blood sugar levels quickly. A diet loaded with such foods may raise your risk for diabetes, some experts say, so it's better to limit them.
For good health
Get most of your carbohydrates from less-processed whole foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Eat six to 11 servings of complex carbohydrates daily. What's a serving? A slice of whole-grain bread, a half-cup of whole-wheat pasta or one-third of a cup of brown rice.
The body needs fat for energy, to pad organs and to transport vitamins. Too much fat can fuel obesity, high cholesterol and heart disease. But not all fats harm you. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may actually help lower cholesterol.
Sources
Monounsaturated fats are found mainly in olive oil, canola oil and nuts. Some vegetable oils, such as corn and canola oils, contain polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats and trans-fatty acids raise the risk for heart disease because they push up cholesterol levels and leave plaque on arteries. Butter, cheese, meat, poultry, palm oil, lard, solid shortenings, and whole or reduced-fat milk yield saturated fat. Trans-fatty acids turn up in solid margarine and a lot of baked goods.
For good health
Limit fast food and processed foods. Use low-fat dairy products and replace saturated fats such as butter with monounsaturated fats like olive oil.
How much?
In a 2002 report, the Institute of Medicine (part of the National Academy of Science) suggested these guidelines for a healthy diet:
• Carbohydrates - 45-65 percent of calories
• Fat - 20-25 percent of calories
• Protein - 10-35 percent of calories
I hope this helps!

Keep Your Head Up & Keep Lookin Forward!
Concentrate on each Day. Make a couple of small goals & reach em, then do it again. South Beach Diet is AMAZING for diabetics, It helps you learn how to eat lower carb w/o starving.
I have made myself a promise to walk on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes everyday, then I mark it down, after I look at it @ the end of the week it feels so good to be able to see what I have accomplished on papper
O & a few great go to snacks for lower carb that are satisfying/filling for me are, Nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds, peanuts), yogurt, cheese stick, celery/cucumber/bellpepper/cherry tomatoes w/ laughing cow flavored cheese wedges, a glass of milk....or for something sweet you can make a ricotta creme dessert take 1/4 c ricotta, a teaspoon or so of vannilla extract or your fav flav of extract & sweeten to taste w/ splenda whip it up & it is so creamy yummy& loaded w/ protein!! i throw some nuts on mine to add some crunch
Keep it up & hang in there, we all fall off track at times the important thing is that we get back on & try to stay on more than we r off!!

Matt thanks
I wonder if sugar diabetics should have that same recommended amount of complex carbs? I suppose I have a hard time looking at foods other than bread based ones, as being carbs, but looks like everything has carbs. I will need to be dilligent in my choices.
