The Points

In 1983, Jenny and Sidney Craig founded the Jenny Craig Weight Management Program in Melbourne, Austrailia. Today, with over 600 weight loss centers (mostly in the US), Jenny Craig has grown in size, popularity, and celebrity endorsements. The cornerstone of the Jenny Craig program is one-on-one counseling. A client meets with a consultant in person or over the phone to discuss eating habits, exercise level, lifestyle, and motivation. After, the consultant customizes a program to meet the client's personal needs and goals. Jenny Craig offers plans for both men and women of multiple ages. While participating in the program, dieters eats three Jenny Craig pre-packaged meals, one snack, and fruits and vegetables each day. Initially, the counselors provide planned menus for all meals. Gradually, the clients begin to build their own menus from the Jenny Craig and allowable foods. The client's ultimate goal is to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle without the pre-packaged meals and counseling. Jenny Craig offers free phone consultations for interested customers.

The Pros

No Counting: Put down the calculator. With Jenny Craig, you don't have to track calories or points. You are not responsible for determining portion or serving sizes. In the initial stage, your consultant lays out clear-cut and easy-to-follow instructions for all your meals.

Convenience and Variety: No need to plan or prepare your meals. Jenny Craig offers a wide variety of lean and tasty products for entrees and snacks. There are no food restrictions. Your menus include smaller portions of all your favorites -- cereals, soups, pastas, desserts, and much more.

One-On-One Support:
The program includes support and guidance. You begin with weekly one-on-one consultations to help understand your needs and build your weight loss strategy. Throughout the process, your personal counselor is available in person or over the phone.

The Cons

Lack of Knowledge: You may not learn a lot about nutrition while participating in Jenny Craig. Counselors are not credentialed in nutrition or behavioral therapy and may lack expertise. You also may have a tough time with portion control once you cease eating the pre-packaged foods.

Lifestyle Conflicts
: If you're an on-the-go person who dines-out regularly, the diet may prove problematic. In order to participate, you will have to eat the prescribed Jenny Craig foods. Also, if you cook for your family, you will most likely have to prepare separate meals.

Costs Add Up: In addition to sign-up and monthly fees, the cost of Jenny Craig foods and shipping will mount up. Meals cost about $65 per week, with an additional $18 per week for supplements, plus your fruits and vegetables. You'll probably spend at least $400 per month on food.
