5 Tips for Writing Vivid Descriptions

Writing vivid descriptions is the art, just as much as painting is. Here instead of strokes, you use words, but the result must be the same: you are to paint a vivid picture for people listening to you to understand your main ideas.

It might seem like a rather simple task, yet it requires a strong knowledge of the subject, ability to express your thoughts vividly, and proper structure of the text.

But do not worry! We know how bright descriptions should be written - and will walk you through the process step by step.

# Use active voice

A good description is easy to read. And it is well-known that active voice is much easier to understand than passive.
Your Dictionary states that there are at least two reasons why it is preferably to use active voice rather than passive. First, active adds impact to your writing. Someone is taking action, and it looks more powerful in active.
Also, they say that “Passive sentences usually have more words than active ones, which is one reason the reader has to work harder to get at the meaning.” Keep it short and simple in order to help readers dig through your words to their meaning.

# Talk about all five senses
Remember to imply to all senses of a reader. Walk the reader through the situation using his sense of smell, sight, hearing, touch, and taste. It will help him dive into the case and understand better what you mean.
This should be a full-body experience for your description to be considered vivid. And this is the technique the essay writer would tell you first when asked about ways to create good narratives.

# Use metaphors and comparisons
Be creative when looking at different things. Try to find similarities and throw in bright comparisons to make your description truly stand out.
But be careful: do not add too many of them or your central message will get lost.

# Describe actions
When novice writers dive into the art of vivid descriptions creation, they mostly think that adding more adjectives will do the trick for them. Unfortunately, that is not true.
The main secret of bright narratives is in adding more verbs that characterize actions. Your text should be built around them. The idea is similar to our first point in this list: verbs, especially used in active voice, add impact to your writing. So, to create a memorable piece, you need to focus on this part of speech.

# Be attentive to details

Details matter in your picture. You cannot afford paying not enough attention to them. Therefore, try to describe important aspects of the story to make more engaging and powerful. But as you do this, do not forget that readers get lost when are overloaded with information. So, take it easy!

Vivid descriptions are possible as long as you do it right. Make sure to take these four requirements into account - add comparisons, metaphors, use active verbs to address all five senses of the readers. As long as you do this, your descriptive essays will be extremely interesting and engaging. You will be painting a picture with your words that would be clear and bright. So, why not applying these simple yet effective rule right away?
