BMI stands for BODY MASS INDEX and is a simple ratio using height and weight.
BMI does NOT take into account BODY COMPOSITION or how much of the total body mass is made up of fat vs. lean tissue (muscle, bone, organs, etc) and water.
BMI is relatively simple to calculate with a straightforward formula using height and weight.
BODY FAT % (BF%) is trickier to accurately measure. There are a variety of methods to try to determine it...
* Girth Measurements (easy to do at home. make sure to find good charts that are specific to age and gender. Accuracy is questionable)
* Skin Fold Calipers'(usually requires a personal trainer)
* Bio-electrical Impedance (use hand held or "stand-on" scale that can be purchased for home use or found at some training centers. Relatively affordable but accuracy is questionable.)
* Hydrostatic (Underwater) Weighing (most accurate but requires specialized facilities and is the most costly option)

Muscle and fat weigh the same, a pound is a pound. Muscle takes up less room than fat.
