What does it mean to pull a muscle and how do you treat it?

A muscle pull is actually a minor strain or small tear in the muscle tissue. A complete tear or rupture, which is a more debilitating and painful defect, will be apparent when the muscle is contracted. With the exception of a complete tear, all muscle strains can be treated with ice and stretching for the first 24 to 48 hours, and the addition of isometric contractions at 48 hours. By 72 hours, light isotonic contractions can be started, the goal of which is to prevent scar tissue from forming and make the muscle less extensible.
